Reconciliation bill promises climate progress, misses opportunity to protect Arctic Refuge
Alaska Wilderness League exploring every option to repeal failed leasing program in final bill

Washington, D.C. – The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, recently announced by Senators Schumer and Manchin, comes as generally welcome news that Senate leadership rekindled legislation to address the climate crisis – but there’s a catch.

Statement by Kristen Miller, conservation director of Alaska Wilderness League:

“We are heartened to see Congress ready to take on legislation that will move desperately needed solutions to the climate crisis. The bill from Majority Leader Schumer and Senator Manchin includes strong efforts to reduce carbon emissions, however no bill should be finalized without a provision to repeal the failed leasing program in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. We will explore every option to see this provision included in a final reconciliation bill.”
