Statement from Alaska Wilderness League on BLM’s Call for Nominations in the Western Arctic

Washington, D.C.—In response to today’s announcement that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is issuing a call for nominations and comments on an upcoming 2025 Western Arctic Oil and Gas Lease Sale, Andy Moderow, senior director of policy at Alaska Wilderness League, issued the following statement:

“The Trump administration’s outrageous announcement shows a sad truth in our country today: The government is open for resource extraction corporations and closed for the people,” said Andy Moderow, senior director of policy at Alaska Wilderness League. “At a time when our government is shut down and essential public workers aren’t getting paid, it’s outrageous that federal leaders are prioritizing oil and gas sales over getting the country back on its feet. This is the start of a public land sell-off in the middle of a shutdown—an action that benefits foreign oil companies at the expense of Americans. We expect better.”
